Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar & Gurugram Plants – Scale, History & Why They Matter
Maruti Suzuki operates two massive manufacturing complexes in Haryana that together produce the majority of all Maruti vehicles sold in India:
The Gurugram Plant (Gurgaon Plant) — located in the IMT Manesar industrial area of Gurugram — was Maruti’s first manufacturing facility in India, established in 1983. It has an annual production capacity of approximately 7.9 lakh vehicles per year and manufactures models including the Alto K10, S-Presso, Eeco, and Jimny. This plant employs over 15,000 direct employees and supports the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands more through its supplier and vendor ecosystem across Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, and beyond.

The Manesar Plant — commissioned in 2006 and located just a few kilometers from the Gurugram facility — has become Maruti’s most advanced production campus, with an annual capacity of approximately 9 lakh vehicles per year across three assembly lines. The Manesar plant manufactures the Swift, Baleno, Brezza, Ciaz, and Ignis. It is also the designated facility for Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming electric vehicle production lines, making it the most strategically important plant in the company’s future roadmap.
Together, these two facilities make Maruti Suzuki’s Haryana complex the single largest passenger vehicle manufacturing cluster in India — and one of the top five largest automobile plants in the entire Asia-Pacific region. A job here is not just employment; it is a career foundation with one of the most respected companies in Indian industrial history.
In 2026, Maruti Suzuki is investing heavily in plant modernization, robotic automation, and EV infrastructure — all of which require fresh technical talent at every level. The company’s target of producing its first mass-market electric vehicle from the Manesar plant has triggered a significant new wave of hiring across engineering, quality, maintenance, and production functions.
Types of Jobs Available at Maruti Suzuki Manesar & Gurugram Plants 2026
The Maruti Suzuki plants offer employment across a broad spectrum of roles. Understanding which category fits your qualification is the first step to a successful application:
ITI Apprentice / Trade Apprentice
This is the entry point for candidates who hold an ITI (Industrial Training Institute) certificate in trades such as Fitter, Welder, Electrician, Machinist, COPA (Computer Operator and Programming Assistant), Painter, Turner, or Instrument Mechanic. Maruti Suzuki hires ITI apprentices under the Apprentices Act 1961, offering structured 1-year training programs directly at the Manesar and Gurugram plants. Apprentices work on real production lines under the mentorship of senior technicians and gain invaluable hands-on experience with Maruti’s advanced manufacturing systems.
Skilled Workman / Production Operator (Permanent)
After completing apprenticeship or with prior automotive manufacturing experience, candidates can apply for permanent Skilled Workman or Production Operator roles. These are full-time, permanent positions with complete Maruti Suzuki benefits including PF, ESI, gratuity, annual bonus, and subsidized canteen. This is the most common entry point to a long-term Maruti Suzuki manufacturing career.
Diploma Trainee / Junior Engineer Trainee
Holders of a 3-year Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Production Engineering, or Automobile Engineering are eligible for Diploma Trainee positions. These trainees rotate through different plant departments — press shop, weld shop, paint shop, assembly, quality — gaining comprehensive manufacturing exposure before being posted to a specific function.
Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET)
B.Tech or BE graduates in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Production, Industrial Engineering, or Automobile Engineering are eligible for Maruti Suzuki’s Graduate Engineer Trainee program. GETs undergo a structured 12-month training program at the plant before being confirmed as Junior Engineers. This is one of the most prestigious entry-level engineering roles available in Indian manufacturing.
Shop Floor Engineer / Production Engineer (Experienced)
Engineers with 2–7 years of automotive manufacturing experience are hired directly into shop floor engineer and production engineer roles. Specializations include Press Shop (metal stamping and forming), Weld Shop (robotic and manual welding), Paint Shop (surface treatment, primer, topcoat, and clear coat processes), Plastic Shop (bumpers, dashboards, interior components), General Assembly (vehicle assembly line), Engine Assembly, and Quality Gate operations.
Maintenance Engineer (Electrical / Mechanical)
Plant maintenance engineers responsible for keeping production equipment, robots, CNC machines, conveyors, and utility systems running are always in demand at both Maruti plants. These roles require strong knowledge of PLC programming (Siemens, Allen Bradley, Fanuc), hydraulics, pneumatics, and preventive maintenance systems like TPM (Total Productive Maintenance).
Quality Engineer / Quality Inspector
Quality assurance professionals ensure that every vehicle leaving the Manesar and Gurugram plants meets Maruti Suzuki’s strict quality standards. QA roles require knowledge of IATF 16949 automotive quality management standards, 8D problem-solving methodology, SPC (Statistical Process Control), MSA (Measurement System Analysis), and APQP/PPAP processes.
Industrial Engineer / IE & Production Planning
Industrial engineers at Maruti focus on time-motion study, line balancing, capacity planning, Kaizen implementation, and production efficiency improvement. These roles are critical to Maruti’s continuous improvement culture and are filled by experienced engineers with knowledge of lean manufacturing principles.
Stores & Logistics / Supply Chain Executive
Maruti’s plants consume thousands of components from hundreds of vendors every day. Supply chain and stores executives manage inbound logistics, inventory control, vendor scheduling, and material flow within the plant. SAP MM module knowledge is highly valued in these roles.
HR, Finance, IT & Administration (Plant Support Functions)
Beyond the shop floor, both plants employ significant numbers of HR executives (for managing large workforces and industrial relations), finance officers (for cost accounting and plant P&L management), IT engineers (for plant ERP, network, and automation systems), and administrative staff. These roles are posted on Maruti’s official career portal and major job boards.

Maruti Suzuki Plant Selection Process – What to Expect
Understanding Maruti Suzuki’s hiring process helps you prepare effectively and avoid surprises. Here is the typical process for each category of applicant:
For ITI Apprentices: The process begins with an application through the official portal or apprenticeship portal. Shortlisted candidates are called for a written trade test covering technical knowledge relevant to their ITI trade (Fitter, Welder, Electrician, etc.), followed by a practical skill demonstration at the plant, a medical fitness examination, and document verification. The entire process typically takes 2–4 weeks from application to joining.
For Diploma and GET Trainees: Diploma and graduate engineer trainees go through a written aptitude test (covering engineering fundamentals, logical reasoning, and quantitative aptitude), a group discussion, a technical interview with plant engineers assessing core engineering knowledge, and a final HR interview. Campus recruits often skip the aptitude test if they are hired directly through placement drives. Preparation resources include standard engineering aptitude books and Maruti Suzuki’s own previous years’ test patterns, which are available on platforms like IndiaBix – Mechanical Engineering Practice.
For Experienced Engineers and Managers: Lateral hires go through a resume screening by Maruti’s talent acquisition team, followed by a telephonic or video screening interview, one or two rounds of technical interviews with department heads or senior managers, and a final HR discussion covering compensation, notice period, and joining date. For senior management roles, there may additionally be a panel interview with Korean expatriate technical leadership.
Career Growth at Maruti Suzuki’s Plants – From ITI to General Manager
One of Maruti Suzuki’s most compelling employer propositions is its clear and merit-based internal career progression. The company has a well-established culture of promoting from within, and many of today’s senior managers and general managers at the Manesar and Gurugram plants started their careers as ITI apprentices or GETs decades ago.
A typical ITI candidate who joins as an apprentice progresses to Skilled Workman (after apprenticeship completion), then to Senior Workman (3–5 years), then to Group Leader or Line Supervisor (5–8 years) with a diploma upgrade, and eventually to Junior Engineer or Section Head with further education and performance. Maruti Suzuki actively supports employee upskilling through tie-ups with correspondence engineering programs and internal training academies.
A GET who joins fresh from college typically moves through Junior Engineer, Engineer, Senior Engineer, Assistant Manager, Deputy Manager, Manager, Senior Manager, and General Manager in a 15–20 year career — with each step accompanied by meaningful salary increases and expanded responsibilities. Maruti’s annual performance appraisal cycle, combined with its STAR (Special Thanks and Recognition) program, ensures that high performers are identified and fast-tracked consistently.
